Cursive practice sheets for adults
Whether you never learned cursive, forgot it after school, or just want handwriting you are not embarrassed by, the method is the same as for children and takes far less time. These free worksheets and the four-week plan below are what most adults need.
The worksheets to download

Cursive practice sheets
8 pages · US Letter, prints on A4 · free
The core set: every lowercase and capital letter, the common joins, words, sentences and a free-writing page. Weeks 1 to 3 of the plan.

Cursive sentences
3 pages · US Letter, prints on A4 · free
Pangrams and short sentences to trace and copy. Good for week 3.
For a letter that will not come right, open its page from the cursive alphabet: each one has the strokes explained and a one-page sheet. The usual adult culprits are r, s, f and z.
A four-week plan, ten minutes a day
-
Week 1
Strokes and the easy letters
Ten minutes a day on the four strokes, then i, t, u, w, e, l, a, c, d, o. Use the 1/2 inch practice sheets even if they feel large; size helps control.
-
Week 2
The rest of the alphabet
Two or three new letters a day, hardest last: r, s, f, k, z. Write each new letter inside a word right away.
-
Week 3
Joins and words
Letter pairs, then sight words and the words you write most: your name, your street, the days of the week.
-
Week 4
Real writing
Switch to 3/8 inch paper. Copy a paragraph a day, then write a short note by hand without a model. Compare with week 1.
Three fixes for messy adult handwriting
- Slant. Turn the paper about 30 degrees instead of bending the wrist. Every downstroke should be parallel.
- Height. Short letters stop at the dashed midline; tall letters reach the top line. Uneven heights are what make writing look untidy.
- Spacing. Letters inside a word touch; words are one o-width apart. Slow down until the spacing is even, then let speed come back.

Questions from adult learners
Can adults learn cursive from scratch?
Yes, and usually faster than children: adults already have the fine motor control, they only need the letter shapes and the joins. Most adults write a readable cursive sentence after two to three weeks of ten-minute daily sessions.
Which cursive style should an adult learn?
For the United States, the traditional school style (Zaner-Bloser) used on this site. It is what most people recognize as cursive, and what is expected on a signature or a handwritten card. Once it is fluent, simplify it into your own hand.
My cursive is messy, not missing. What should I practice?
Three things fix most adult handwriting: consistent slant (fix the paper angle), consistent height of short letters (use the dashed midline), and even spacing (about one o-width between words). Practice on lined paper for a week, then on plain paper.
What size lines should adults use?
Start with the 1/2 inch worksheets to relearn shapes, then move to 3/8 inch paper, which is close to the size of normal adult handwriting. College-ruled paper is too narrow for practice.
